New to Skateboarding

When looking for a skateboard for beginners, the best way to start shopping would be to browse the complete skateboards. You also want to start with a smaller deck, so you can master your footwork and start with basic tricks. It’s best to get out and get a feel for skating while you learn what you like. Everyone remembers his or her first board, so choose wisely! If you are a beginner to skateboarding (or want to practice your skateboarding skills in the winter), you might want to check out the balance boards. These devices are targeted towards helping newcomers really get acquainted with the feel of skateboarding.

Types of Skateboards

Most skateboards average about 28” to 32” in length and are shaped like a popsicle with a slight curve on both ends. If you’re looking to do more tricks, try a board with a steeper concave for more pop. Smaller and lighter wheels can also help the skateboard catch more air. But if you think you’ll do more ramps, the larger wheels offer a bit more stability. Cruiser boards are mid-size skateboards -- longer than skateboards, but shorter than most longboards -- built more for cruising and not so much tricks. Unlike Longboards, they have the kicktails to give them an added dimension, making them more maneuverable on streets and through crowds. Longboards are typically more than 33” in length and built more for laid back touring and cruising. If you are not looking to be doing too many tricks with your skateboard, and you’d rather just cruise around, you might consider getting a longboard. The larger and wider platforms found on longboards will also help you get more comfortable with the skate feel, so you can really get your balance down. Although longboards are known for a more laidback, cruising lifestyle, they can also be taken to the next level with downhill racing and freeriding with slides. Skateboard Safely

While you may see many skateboarders around wearing no protection that does not mean it is a good idea. Many of the skaters you see on YouTube doing tricks learned their tricks wearing full skate protection, including skateboard helmets and pads, like kneepads, elbow pads and wrist guards. No matter the skaters level, there’s always going to be spills, bails, scrapes, and bruises. It’s part of the sport to challenge you to bring it to the next level.
